Are there any other cards besides Chase Slate that don't have a transaction fee for balance transfers?

By: CompareCards | Jan 7, 2016

Hi Robin,

The Chase Slate card is not the only credit card that has no balance transfer fee, but it is the only one that also has no annual fee and a lengthy 0% intro APR. For more details, check out our latest blog post about credit cards with no balance transfer fee!

I applied for a Citi Bank MasterCard and was approved . The balance I need to transfer is more than I was approved for can I cancel the card?

Hi Joanne,

You can certainly cancel the card if you choose. However, depending on your situation, it may be wise to leave it open. If the card you applied for has a 0% APR on balance transfers and you're currently paying a high interest rate, you could still save a lot of money by transferring a portion of that balance over to your new Citi card. Although it is not ideal, it would still help you avoid interest charges on part of your balance. You could consider applying for another offer with 0% APR, like the Chase Slate, to help pay off the rest of your balance.

My opinion? Call them and tell them the circumstances. They may increase the credit line if they know the reason you are opening the card is to transfer debt to them and not create it. Worth a try.

I have all of the cards. Should I close out my slate card which has a zero balance and then re-open it to transfer a balance on an Amex card over? How long do I have to have the slate closed before I can re-apply? And does closing that slate card affect my credit score? How do you do cash advances? Do you have to have a new card for cash advances as well?

first of all, I would never close a card. one of the factors that effect your credit rating is the ratio of used credit to open credit. second, I would call chase and ask them -- they don't want to see you go somewhere else. third, if you are considering chase, I would look at the Bank of America cards (one is a better balance card, which gives you a bonus payment of $25(?) every quarter if you always pay more than the limit. I am not sure if that applies if you have nothing due, but it's sure worth a try!

Was looking for a good card to transfer balances to. I was looking a lot say 0% interest for a time but below it says 3% interest on balance transfers. So I'm a little confused.

By: CompareCards | Jan 6, 2016

Hi Jennifer,

The 3% number that you are seeing is referring to the balance transfer fee, not the interest rate. For example, the Citi Simplicity offers 0% APR for 21 months, but it comes with a 3% balance transfer fee. This means that if you transfer $1,000 to this card, you will be changed a fee of $30, making your total balance $1,030. But since you will have 21 months to pay this balance down totally interest free, you will still save a lot of money as opposed to attempting to pay it down on a card with a high interest rate.

I had a Chase Slate card and recently closed the account. Can I apply as a "new" account holder and get the introductory offer? Is there a set timeframe to pass before I would be considered a new customer?

By: CompareCards | Dec 2, 2015

Hi Abe,

The terms on the application for the Chase Slate are not 100% clear on whether or not you will be able to receive the promotional financing offer a second time, but it seems unlikely. Here is the section of their Terms and Conditions that most closely referred to your question:

"Chase cardmembers currently receiving promotional pricing, or Chase cardmembers with a history of only using their current or prior Chase card for promotional pricing offers, are not eligible for a second Chase credit card with promotional pricing."

I already have the Chase Slate card and was going to transfer 4 of my other card balances over to it. When I called in I was told there is a 2% balance transfer fee. Can I get the 0 fee and 0% if I already have a card?

By: CompareCards | Nov 17, 2015

Hi Regina,

The attractive balance transfer offer on the Chase Slate card is only available to new customers. There is no intro balance transfer fee for transfers made within the first 60 days, so if you've had the card longer than 60 days, then you'll have to pay a transfer fee. Also, there is 0% intro APR for the first 15 months, so if you're past that time period, then you will pay your standard APR on any new balance transfers.

Can you transfer $ from a card not in your name, to a card in your name.

By: CompareCards | Nov 15, 2015

Hi Valeria,

Yes, you can transfer a balance from someone else's credit card to a card in your name. However, this is an extremely risky proposition. Once the debt is transferred onto a card in your name, you become 100% responsible for the payment of the debt.

Compare 0% Balance Transfer Credit Cards & Offers

One of the main reasons that people shop for a new credit card is in order to find banks that offer special 0% balance transfer credit cards for the longest period of time and with low transfer fees. In recent years consumers have started to use credit cards more wisely than they did before the big credit crisis. Now they tend to shift high-interest card balances to cards that offer a lower APR, because in doing so they are able to gain immediate and substantial savings.

Use our free balance transfer calculator and credit card payoff calculator found on this site to figure out how much money you can save by getting a better interest rate. Then look in this section for the best balance transfer credit cards that offer good deals such as 0% interest for 1 to 2 years, no-fee balance transfers, and lower regular APR rates. You will want to pay special attention to any minimum charges or transfer % that a credit card company might impose on you for transferring a balance – deduct that cost from your overall savings in order to arrive at a real net savings for transferring to a new credit card.

Let’s say that you have a card that you’re currently paying 25% interest on, but you find a card here that will only charge you 3.99% for the first year and 18% thereafter. By moving your balance to the new card you can save more than 20% right away, and 7% over the long term. If your transfer amount is $3,000 that means you save around $500– $600 in interest within the next 12 months.

Reviews
" " CompareCards says issuers are providing such generous deals, they're virtually irresistible for those willing to switch.

" " Those who always pay their balances in full and on time will usually come out ahead.

" " The offers on the credit card landscape are constantly changing which is great news for consumers.

" " In the future, the companies that will thrive are those able to give customers exactly what they want, the way they want it, when they want it.

" " CompareCards was one of three sites that met all the criteria.
